Our Programs

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches children ages 6 through 18 with mentors in professionally supported one-to-one relationships. We have volunteer programs in communities across the country - including yours.

Making the Connection

Big Brothers Big Sisters has a variety of volunteer opportunities available.

Matches come together through our two essential programs:

Community-based Mentoring : For as little as an hour a week, Bigs and Littles meet in their community to share fun activities ... stories ... and a little bit of themselves.

School-based Mentoring : Bigs and Littles meet once a week in schools, libraries and community centers, to talk and have fun. It's not about being a tutor ... it's about being a friend.

How a Big becomes a Big (and a Little)

A lot of things have to happen before we make a match. After they express an interest in our volunteer opportunities, all our Bigs go through a thorough background check and careful interview process. Then we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities and preferences. And we provide full support for our volunteer programs along the way - so that matches can grow into lasting friendships.

Children in our Community-based and School- based program are referred by their parent, teacher or guardian. We primarily serve children who lack the involvement and support of both parents in their home.

Warning:

You are using an older web browser that is not compatible with basic Web standards.

We recommend that you upgrade to one of the following browsers:

Windows or Mac Users:

Netscape 6+, Opera 6+, MSIE 6+

Linux OS:

Netscape 6+, Konqueror

In an effort to create a more organized World Wide Web, the W3C has created many new Web layout standards. The key focus of their effort is to provide the best possible interoperability between the different browsing programs available.

In the days of the browser wars between Netscape and Microsoft, many hacks were propagated by the competing companies. However, today these hacks have done more to hurt the Web than to help the battling companies. By downloading and installing one of the programs listed above, the Web will be one step closer to eliminating these hacks and bugs.
